ALL SERIAL KILLERS, almost without exception, are severely 
sexually abused as children. The kind of people who hijack a 
plane with innocent people and drive it into a building with 
thousands of other innocent people are related to this 
phenomenon.

When sociopaths rape and kill, they do not see their victims as 
human beings, but only as objects. This is because the 
sociopaths were themselves, at one time, used as objects   as 
their bodily integrity was repeatedly violated. The rage that 
results from sexual abuse is one thing, but when combined with 
living in a dysfunctional culture of sexual repression and 
misogyny, where love is reduced to violent domination, it is 
quite another.

Throughout the Islamic Middle East, men and women are taught to 
be vehemently opposed to pleasure, especially of the sexual 
variety. Men are raised not only forbidden to touch women, but 
to even look at them. Sex before marriage is not just a sin -- 
but a criminal offence. It is punishable by a severe beating at 
best, and an execution at worst.

The sexual privileges that are allowed in Islamic cultures are 
permitted to men. Women s sexuality and social independence 
represent major threats to male supremacy and are tightly 
controlled. Thus, as the Moroccan feminist Fitna Sabbah reveals 
in her book Woman in the Muslim Unconscious, there is a 
disturbing conflict in the Middle East between sexual libido and 
repression. A deep-seated fear of, and hostility to, 
individuality prevails, and its main expression exists in 
misogyny.

Socially segregated from women, Arab men succumb to homosexual 
behavior. But, interestingly enough, there is no word 
for "homosexual" in their culture in the modern Western sense. 
That is because having sex with boys, or with effeminate men, is 
seen as a social norm. Males serve as available substitutes for 
unavailable women. The male who does the penetrating, meanwhile, 
is not emasculated any more than if he had sex with a wife. The 
male who is penetrated is emasculated. The boy, however, is not, 
since it is rationalized that he is not yet a man.

In this culture, males sexually penetrating males becomes a 
manifestation of male power, conferring a status of hyper-
masculinity. It is considered to have nothing to do with 
homosexuality. An unmarried man who has sex with boys is simply 
doing what men do. As the scholar Bruce Dunne has demonstrated, 
sex in Islamic societies is not about mutuality between 
partners, but about the adult male's achievement of pleasure 
through violent domination.

There is silence around this issue. It is the silence that 
legitimizes sexual violence against women, such as honor crimes 
and female circumcision. It is also the silence that forces 
victimized Arab boys into invisibility. Even though the society 
does not see their sexual exploitation as being humiliating, the 
psychological and emotional scars that result from their 
subordination, powerlessness and humiliation is a given. 
Traumatized by the violation of their dignity and manliness, 
they spend the rest of their lives trying to get it back. 

The problem is that trying to recover from sexual abuse, and to 
recapture one s own shattered masculinity, is quite an ordeal in 
a culture where women are hated and love is interpreted as 
hegemonic control.

With women out of touch   and out of sight -- until marriage, 
males experience pre-marital sex only in the confines of being 
with other males. Their sexual outlet mostly includes 
victimizing younger males   just the way they were victimized.

In all of these circumstances, the idea of love is removed from 
men's understanding of sexuality. Like the essence of Arab 
masculinity, it is reduced to hurting others by violence. A 
gigantic rupture develops between men and women, where no 
harmony, affection or equality is allowed to exist. In 
relationships between men, meanwhile, affection, solidarity and 
empathy are left out of the picture. They threaten the hyper-
masculine order. 

It is excruciating to imagine the sexual confusion, humiliation, 
and repression that evolve in the mindsets of males in this 
culture. But it is no surprise that many of these males find 
their only avenue for gratification in the act of humiliating 
the foreign "enemy," whose masculinity must be violated at all 
costs   as theirs once was. 

Violating the masculinity of the enemy necessitates the dishing 
out of severe violence against him. In the recent terrorist 
strikes, therefore, violence against Americans served as a much-
needed release of the terrorists  bottled-up sexual rage. 
Moreover, it served as a desperate and pathological testament of 
the re-masculinization of their emasculated selves.

Revisiting the Quran
A Report from the First International Retreat for GLBT Muslims

I am gay. I am a Pakistani-Canadian. I am a Muslim. For as long 
as I can recall, these three elements of my identity have either 
been on a mission to break away and assert themselves as 
distinct entities, or in a constant struggle for dominance. Thus 
far, being gay and a Pakistani-Canadian have taken on more 
significance in my life than being a Muslim. Maybe tomorrow 
things will change. In fact, I know that tomorrow things will 
change. I've come to rely on change. It is change that beckoned 
me to attend the First International Retreat for Gay, Lesbian, 
Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Muslims, and their friends, in 
Boston on the weekend of October 9th - 12th, 1998.

I must admit that I went to Boston, not knowing what to expect. 
Although, I was hoping I would meet the perfect desi Muslim boy 
and that the nikkah would be completed by the end of the weekend 
& & .& just kidding. Like I was saying, I didn't know what to 
expect. However, it was brought to my attention, by one of my 
close friends, that perhaps the whole event was being staged by 
some right-wing, Islamic puritan group, that was planning to 
gather all the queer Muslims in one location and exterminate us 
all at once. She actually went so far as to give me the name and 
number of a friend in Boston just in case anything happened. 
Upon arriving at the location of the retreat, which was only 
disclosed to the attendees for security purposes, I soon 
realized that of the 200 or so people who had inquired about the 
event, only 30 were going to be in attendance. The primary 
reason for this being, security, as well as visibility concerns. 
So my dear friend was not off base at all in her assessment. By 
the grace of Allah, no such fiasco occurred. In my heart, I knew 
that nothing like that was going to happen, unfortunately, not 
everyone was so sure. But can anyone blame them for their fears?

Although I was born Muslim, I don't presently practice the 
religion. Neither does anyone in my immediate family. I was born 
in Lahore, Pakistan and lived in Rawalpindi with my phuppie 
until the age of ten, at which point I immigrated to Canada to 
come live with my parents. While living in Pakistan, I had 
learned how to perform namaz, and to recite the Holy Quran, and 
all of the kalmas; however, I gradually forgot it all in Canada.

It wasn't until the age of 17, while I was struggling with my 
sexuality, that I decided to revisit the Quran, in order to find 
out what Allah had to say about homosexuals. I vividly recall 
reading the Quranic verses and feeling my chest close in on me. 
How could Allah be so cruel, so heartless as to punish people 
like myself? All I ever wanted to do was to love someone, and to 
receive that love in return. But it was hopeless; nothing I read 
allowed me to be who I am.

At that point, I put the book away and decided to abandon Islam. 
In fact, I started learning about other faiths, including 
Hinduism, and Christianity. I figured that if these faiths had 
their own floats on Pride Day, that maybe they were more 
accommodating of queers. Furthermore, the people around me 
sparked my initial interest in these two faiths. Two of my close 
friends are Hindu and Christian. I have since attended my first 
queer Christmas mass, and have come to adore the Mahabharata and 
the Sermon on the Mount. Despite by increased understanding of 
Hinduism and Christianity, I was always aware that there was 
something missing. It was as though my mind was the only thing 
being engaged, leaving my soul unspoken for. Spirituality is 
supposed to be an alchemy of the heart, something that is with 
you in every endeavor, in every aspect of life. For me, that 
feeling of submission is what was missing.

So there I was, in Boston, Massachusetts, on a rainy weekend in 
a room full of the most diverse people you could imagine. There 
were folks coming in from the Netherlands, South Africa, and 
Belgium. Others were from Arizona, Boston, Chicago, Washington 
D.C., and N.Y. City. Unfortunately, I was the only Canadian 
there. There were approximately five lesbian-identified women, 
one woman who refused to be classified, one female-to-male 
transgender and about 23 gay-identified men. They represented 
various class, age and cultural backgrounds. We had African-
Americans, South Asians, Europeans, and Middle-Eastern folks, 
just to name a few. We also had a significant non-Muslim 
presence.

We participated in intense debates and discussions focused on 
various topics including: Islam and LGBT identity, what Islam 
really says about homosexuality, as well as the obstacles and 
challenges faced by LGBT Muslims around the world. In addition, 
we undertook cross-cultural comparisons of gender and sexuality 
in Islamic societies (both present and historic), and lastly, we 
addressed the issue of how to celebrate our lives as LGBT 
Muslims. The conversations were at times extremely frustrating, 
as everyone wanted a chance to share their personal experiences 
and struggles. The irony of it was that this was perhaps the 
first time they had been given a 'safe space' to do so.

For me, the most significant part of this retreat was witnessing 
that there were LGBT Muslims out there who had managed to 
develop and maintain a positive LGBT identity, while still 
following Islam. I also learned to separate the widely accepted 
interpretations of the mullahs, which are riddled with 
heterosexist bias, from the truest form of Islam, which stresses 
the fundamental principles of equality and justice. I have to 
admit that at some level I was hoping to find some theological 
accommodation for homosexuality in the Holy Quran. I never found 
that. Time simply did not permit an exhaustive theological 
examination. However, what I did find was affirmation, 
affirmation for myself as an individual. I am gay, by nature, 
and I refuse to believe that Allah created people who are sinful 
by their very nature.

I have come away from this retreat feeling empowered, not only 
on a personal level, but also on a community level. I say this 
because never in my life have I felt such a strong sense of 
community, certainly not in the mainstream Islamic community.

We have all heard the term 'familiarity breeds contempt', but in 
this instance the opposite was true. I realized soon after the 
retreat that the 'feeling of submission' that was missing for me 
was a consequence of the strong sense of affinity that I feel 
not only for Islam the religion, but also for the rich Islamic 
culture. Islam is indeed more than a religion, it is a way of 
life.

As a community, we have taken it upon ourselves to partake in 
the development of an actual International Organization for LGBT 
Muslims. Preliminarily, the name will be 'Al-Fatiha' (The 
Opening), titled after the first chapter of the Quran. Due to 
the diversity of our group and our ideas, it was decided that 
our goals and objectives would be multi-faceted. We will address 
issues ranging from human rights abuses in Islamic countries 
towards LGBT Muslims, to setting up support groups and other 
community resources in North America and abroad. The work that 
lies ahead is tremendous, but this retreat proved to all of us 
that it is long overdue.

I liken my journey to Boston with the words of Rabindranath 
Tagore, who once wrote that 'The traveler has to knock at every 
alien door to come to his own, one has to wander through all the 
outer worlds to reach the innermost shrine at the end.'

Yugoslavia no longer exists and it seems to me that the only way 
to bring peace in Iraq is to achieve a similar federal 
tripartite solution for the Shi ites, Sunnis and Kurds. Given 
the violence of the last week alone   60 killed and 120 wounded 
by a car bomb, three election officials killed in an ambush, 18 
Americans slaughtered inside an American base   it must be 
foolhardy to think that the forthcoming elections will presage 
peaceful democracy. 

Peter Galbraith, the former American ambassador to Croatia, with 
his vantage point in Zagreb during the bloodbath in Bosnia, was 
able to see how a country cobbled together by the allies was 
failing to work. When he visited Iraq after the American 
conquest last year he was struck by how similar the equally 
artificial British-created country was to what he had witnessed 
in the Balkans. 

Yugoslavia fell apart violently when the powerful Serbian 
minority began to flex its nationalist muscles and met the 
resistance of the majority to Serbian rule. The Serbian leader, 
Slobodan Milosevic, then used Serbian ethnic nationalist fears 
to stir up inter- ethnic strife, with devastating results. 

We are seeing the same pattern in Iraq and with identical 
potentially lethal consequences. The Sunnis   Iraq s former 
ruling class   know they will be the minority in a democratic 
unified state and want to sabotage the new Iraq America is 
trying to create. Bungled American handling of the transition is 
making matters far worse by allowing non-Iraqi Sunni Arab 
Islamic fanatics to enter the country and add a whole extra 
terrorist dimension. 

So, in the so-called Sunni triangle of central Iraq, we have two 
ideologically disparate groups coming together in hatred for the 
new Iraq. Joining the politically dispossessed Sunni Ba athists 
are Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic fanatics for whom Iraq is part of 
the holy war to restore Sunni rule to the lands of the ancient 
Islamic caliphate, whose capital in its Abbasid glory days was 
at Baghdad. Despite their secular/Islamist differences, both 
hate the prospect of democracy, one that will see the Shi ite 
majority in power for the first time. 

Under Saddam such fanatics were kept out since, for all his 
occasional nods towards Islam, he was essentially a secularist. 
(Michel Aflaq, founder of the Ba ath party, was a Syrian 
Christian, and Tariq Aziz, Saddam s deputy, is from Iraq s small 
Christian minority.) But thanks to Donald Rumsfeld s  army 
lite , such groups have been able to enter Iraq through the 
porous Syrian border. Jihad, holy war, has come to Iraq. 

Islam is far from monolithic. There are divergences of doctrinal 
belief, such as between mainstream Sunnis and minority Ismailis 
(who follow the Aga Khan). Most Muslims also reject the 
extremist views of the Wahhabi sect of (Sunni) Hanbali Islam, an 
austere 18th-century interpretation of the Koran that 
predominates in Saudi Arabia, and from which radicals such as 
Osama Bin Laden gain their theological inspiration. 

According to the Koran, Muslims are not supposed to attack each 
other, but the violence against Shi ite Muslims in the two holy 
Shi ite shrines of Karbala and Najaf last weekend show that some 
Sunni extremists have no qualms about Muslim-Muslim terror. They 
take their cue from writers such as Sayyid Qutb (1906-66), the 
Egyptian whose book Signposts (or Milestones) is to present-day 
Islamic extremism what Lenin s books were to Bolshevism. Qutb s 
main enemies were leaders such as Nasser whom he felt had 
betrayed Islam. Qutb s modern disciples, such as Bin Laden, take 
a similar view of rulers who are insufficiently Islamic, such as 
the al-Saud dynasty in Saudi Arabia. 

American officials are now worried that Iraq might take 
the  Iranian option  and, given the close ties between Iran and 
many of the leading Shi ite theologians in Iraq, this is not 
surprising. This is where the other Iraqi minority, the Kurds, 
enter the picture. 

The Kurds have felt betrayed ever since Winston Churchill and 
other western leaders denied them a state of their own after 
1918. While Kurds are predominantly Sunni Muslim, they do not 
identify with their fellow Sunnis in Iraq, since for them their 
Kurdish nationality matters more than their Sunni beliefs. 

Most Kurds today are essentially secular, and so the idea of 
being in an Arab Shi ite theocracy would be a double nightmare, 
both ethnically and theologically. But an independent Kurdistan 
would be a security nightmare for Turkey and Iran, which have 
large Kurdish minorities. Straight independence would thus be a 
risky solution. 

This is why Galbraith is surely right to say that only a 
tripartite solution will work. (So too might a cantonal model, 
which would deal with the problem of the Shi ites in the Sadr 
City section of Baghdad, a Shi ite enclave within a 
predominantly Sunni region.) 

Devolution on thorny issues such as education would enable Sunni 
Arabs and (secular) non-Arab Sunni Kurds to be free from 
domination from a potentially theocratic Shi ite Arab national 
majority. The federal government would deal with matters such as 
defence and foreign policy where religious and ethnic 
sensitivities might not be so acute. If oil revenues were shared 
on a federal basis that would make up for the fact that there is 
little oil in Sunni Arab areas.

fighters very openly. In a short time, and certainly within a

It's the first large-scale 21st-century conflict against an 
aggressive insurgency, causing thousands of US casualties; the 
first war in more than a generation in which homeland security 
and the threat of domestic terror attack seem so real; the 
first "semi-draft," with the Guard/reserve component approaching

BAGHDAD - The U.S. military s conclusion that a suicide bomber 
inside a U.S. base was probably responsible for the deadliest 
strike on Americans in Iraq creates nightmare dilemmas for U.S. 
forces.


Two months after twin suicide bombings struck at the heart of 
U.S. political influence in Iraq, Baghdad s fortified Green Zone 
government compound, Tuesday s Mosul attack raises anxiety 
levels for troops, eroding any comfort zone in a country where 
they face incessant dangers outside their bases.

With the recruitment of Iraqis to security forces and other jobs 
inside U.S. camps seen as vital to an exit strategy from Iraq 
for American soldiers, it could also sow mistrust.

At first sight, many will be surprised that a man strapped with 
explosives could somehow gain access in broad daylight not just 
to the sprawling airfield complex that is Forward Operating Base 
Marez in Mosul but walk right into the mess tent for lunch.

Yet U.S. bases are teeming multinational villages where huge 
numbers of local security forces and Iraqi and foreign civilians 
mingle with American troops, eating in their canteens, sharing 
their shops and working with them to build new facilities.

The sheer scale of movement in and out of these areas, however 
fortified they may appear with high walls, razor wire, 
watchtowers, mortar squads and helicopters, makes controlling 
what and who goes in and out virtually impossible.

 The sheer logistics of life support for the Americans make it 
physically impossible to check everything,  said a Western 
security consultant in Iraq, declining to be identified.

America's handling of the occupation of Iraq came in for 
scathing criticism yesterday, with government officials accused 
of living in a "fantasyland" and failing to learn from mistakes 
made in Vietnam. 
A report issued by the independent Centre for Strategic and 
International Studies charged that the occupation had been 
handled by "ideologues" in the Bush administration who 
consistently underestimated the scale of the problems they were 
facing and this had contributed to a culture in which facts were 
wilfully misrepresented. 

The report lists a litany of errors on the part of the 
US. "Their strategic assessments of Iraq were wrong," it 
says. "They were fundamentally wrong about how the Iraqi people 
would view the United States invasion. They were wrong about the 
problems in establishing effective governance, and they 
underestimated the difficulties in creating a new government 
that was legitimate in Iraqi eyes. 

"They greatly exaggerated the relevance and influence of Iraqi 
exiles, and greatly underestimated the scale of Iraq's economic, 
ethnic, and demographic problems." 

The report lays responsibility for these errors with the 
policymakers in Washington. 

"The problem with dealing with the Iraqi army and security 
forces was handled largely by ideologues who had a totally 
unrealistic grand strategy for transforming Iraq and the Middle 
East," the report says. 

Under the heading "Denial as a method of counter-insurgency 
warfare", it notes that the US "failed to honestly assess the
