When the terrorists openly attacked the United States it became clear that hatred for Americans had taken the next step above simple rhetoric. Throughout recent decades with the advent of satellite television and the expanse of cable networks, Americans have been portrayed to the world with very negative news reports. National as well as local news is watched across the Mediterranean, Asia, and Africa by anyone who has a television. The news from New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, or even Cadillac, Michigan can be viewed from someone on the other side of the world. What they see is negative, emotional, worthless stories that do not represent American life at the grass roots level. However, from the vantage point of someone who has never lived in America those people would think that the whole of the United States is corrupted and that the news is honestly reflected in their reports. People in the United States have become aware since 9/11 of how our media has projected the heart beat of America in a negative way.

Security in the United States has risen to levels never before witnessed. An incredible technology boom happened to coincide with the 9/11 attacks and micro components rapidly advanced many software markets. Advancement in cellular telephones was focused on since their usefulness was clearly portrayed during the terrorist attacks. In today’s world cellular phones now include cameras and many applications never dreamed of only ten years ago. The attacks on 9/11 pushed the advancement of micro technology to new vistas that could be used to protect United States citizens.

Throughout the world the 9/11 attacks caused an indirect domino affect throughout many countries. Because of the rapid advancement in technology youth movements in countries where the Arab Spring has blossomed can also point to their cellular phones as having a key role in their organizational efforts. If the terrorists had not attacked the United States the mad dash to improve communications technology may not have reached today’s levels for another decade.

Subsequently the technology also advanced in the industry that produces unmanned drones, which are flown into combat areas. These drones carry a wealth of technology that report via low level geostationary satellites of insurgent activities to multiple command headquarters. The rapid increase in technology has resulted in smaller high speed computers that can plot the geology of the earth that is reflected in GPS products becoming available worldwide. The 9/11 event pushed the need for higher technology which has changed our county and economy.

September 11, 2001; a date that will live in the hearts and minds of Americans forever. It all started as a beautiful morning in New York City, when suddenly a plane crashed into one of the buildings of the World Trade Center. As news reporters and investigators stood stunned thinking the crash may have been an accident, a second plane crashed into the second building, resulting in both building crumbling to the ground and thousands of deaths. Later in the day, a plane crashed into the U.S. Pentagon, and another hijacked plane was intentionally crashed in Maryland by very brave passengers. The memory of the day still lives on with Americans and people around the world, as some still speculate as to who the true perpetrator was in the organized attack.

A number of polls and online surveys have been conducted worldwide to discover what the public truly believes about the masterminds behind the attack on America. To this day, it has been stated that the organization behind the attacks was Al Qaeda, but some people are not so sure. Some people believe the attack was not a true attack at all, but rather a way of the U.S. covering up negligence or creating a common enemy. The U.S. declared war on Al Qaeda shortly after the attacks, and after the deaths of Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, some people still question what really happened on that awful day.

A worldwide average online survey states that 46% of people believe Al Qaeda was behind the attacks, 15% believe the U.S. government is to blame, 7% believe Israel was the attacker, 7% think of another country entirely, and 25% of the public does not know who to blame. Upon studying the results of individual country distributed polls, it is clearly evident that many countries are highly biased in their opinions. Most countries have the majority leaning towards Al Qaeda, but countries such as Jordan and Egypt feature quite impressive numbers (31% and 43%, respectively) that believe Israel was in charge of the attacks, while countries such as Mexico and Turkey have high numbers leaning towards the U.S government (30% and 36%, respectively). While the overall numbers state that the majority of the world believes Al Qaeda was to blame for the attacks, there will likely never be a 100% belief as to who the true perpetrator was, as there will always be conspiracy, bias and false data for which to account.

The terrorist attacks on September11, 2011 had profound effects upon the American political landscape. There were major changes in public policy and public perceptions, which had long-lasting consequences.

One immediate effect was more government intrusion and a greater public tolerance for it. Following the attacks, there were changes in rules and procedures for passengers of airlines and other forms of public transportation. Luggage was more thoroughly searched, more items were prohibited, and passengers faced longer lines at airports. Although it was kept secret at first, the U.S. government increased its surveillance of a broader range of American citizens and residents, and broadened the limits of acceptable interrogation techniques of people in custody. Although some of these policy changes were controversial, they were now much more acceptable than before the attacks.

Another effect was an increase in anti-Islamic feeling among the American public. Many Americans were willing to let people of Middle-Eastern origin face greater restrictions in public transportation. A few Americans went further, and engaged in illegal threats and attacks against law-abiding Moslems living in this country. There was also increased criticism of Islam by many American politicians and media celebrities. Anti-Islamic feeling had always been around for part of the American public, but after the 9-11 attacks it became much more outspoken.

The 9-11 attacks had a direct effect upon American foreign policy by sparking two major military interventions. In less than two years the United States had launched invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Though the regimes governing those countries were both quickly overthrown, the United States and its allies became involved in long-running struggles against fundamentalist Islamic insurgency forces. Eventually there was a lot of public and political opposition to these interventions, but in the 18 months following 9-11 public support was pervasive.

The expansion of American overseas involvement led directly to the fourth major effect. Coming at the same time as a major tax cut initiative, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan helped turn a national budget surplus into a large budget deficit. The budget savings that had been anticipated with the end of the Cold War vanished nearly overnight. This was only a minor problem as long as the economy was running well, but when the financial system crashed in 2008 there was little the federal government could do to grease the wheels of the American economy.

On September 11, 2001 the face of America was forever changed. American Airlines Flight 11, originally bound for Los Angeles, was hijacked by five men. The plane hit between the 93′rd and 99′th floors of the 110 story building, damaging the central core of the and causing a massive fire.

American Airlines Flight 77 and United Airlines flight 175 were simultaneously commandeered by five hijackers each. At 9:03 AM as terrified New Yorkers and television viewers watched in horror, Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center between the 77′th and 85′th floors. Undetected, Flight 77 changed course and headed for Washington D.C., and at 9:37 AM crashed into the western side of the Pentagon building.

United Airlines Flight 93 was hijacked by 4 terrorists and headed toward Washington D.C. Unlike the other three flights the passengers of Flight 93 became aware of the flights’ takeover. After phone calls to loved ones the passengers learned of the other three flights and their sad fate. The passengers voted, and decided to try to take back the plane by force. At 10:03 am Flight 93 went down in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, about 174 miles from Washington D.C. Although the intended goal was not confirmed, it is believed that the White House or the Capitol building were plausible targets.

Meanwhile, back in New York City, evacuations of the Twin Towers and surrounding buildings were still in progress. Then, at 9:59 AM, the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed with a deafening roar and a huge cloud of smoke and dust. By this time the story had become global and the disaster was being viewed by millions around the world. At 10:28 AM the North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Many other buildings were damaged or destroyed as a consequence of the Towers falling.

The events of that September morning would forever change the United States. Al-Qaeda took credit for the attacks, which started a war on terror that is still going more than 10 years later. In total that day 2,752 lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks. September 11, 2001 is a now infamous day in American History.
